Toronto shelters why mess with success

The staffs were are always more than happy to assist me with my homework as English is not my first language and provided bus tokens for me to go school. With their support I graduated from college in August with a diploma in Project Administration and will now be pursuing a higher education at the University of Toronto.

There is also no guarantee they will be welcomed by facility staff who may have little experience managing addictions or serious mental health issues, or by other residents who have no street experience. These homes operate at a fraction of the cost of shelters and provide stability, opportunity and community. But there are already people on the waiting list for these homes. Unless we see new homes to replace the beds lost by these shelter closures, displaced residents will either go to the bottom of the list, or bump others who have been waiting for years.

Build on it. What started as shelters — a respite from the street and the big downtown hostels — have turned into stable, supportive communities. Let them find a funding arrangement that recognizes the appropriate role of both the City and the Province — as well as the savings to both in keeping these shelters open.

But it is one that needs to happen. It makes good fiscal sense and political sense. Please note that you will receive all rewards both at your level and at all levels below.
